Systems Ecology
- We currently use OS X, MacOS X, for certain applications
combined with Classic (MacOS 9.2.2) or MacOS 8.1 for special
purposes. All systems have to be English and, please, don't
use any system version which is different from the currently
recommended one (consult before going ahead with any
installation). In particular don't use a preinstalled system
which comes with a new machine! Use the latest installation
CD/DVD to install or maintain the system software (get the CD
bags, which contain all our software). Some special systems,
e.g. the release server, need special system software. Some of
this software is still offered in the folder Standard
Systems.
- As a first step you need to connect your machine to the LAN and the internet.
Please do this before you install the system software. You find hints on how
to accomplish this in this
document
(access restricted, log into
"se-server.ethz.ch" volume "SE_Software"
as a registered user).
- Once connected install your basic system software.
We have useful
e-Books, which are highly recommended to consult before deciding how to
proceed with a system installation.
Hint for older systems: Once installed it is recommended to complement your installation by downloading the folder
To_start_copy_me_to_your_HD.
That folder may become handy later. In particular for Classic the folder
Utilities
is of particular use and should be kept within the folder "Applications (Mac OS 9)".
- Use the latest DVD "AF's DVD ToInstall X" to install additional
applications and utilities. See below for recommendations. Large
applications such as Office come on their own separate distribution
CD or DVD. Make sure you also update such applications immediately
to their latest versions of that software, which come typically
also on separate update DVD/CD's.
- To work with our literature data base
SE EndNote Release (the only one to use)
install FileMaker and the needed files. All what you need you get from here:
Docu, FileMaker templates, and masters of auxiliary data base files.
- Get
RAMSES
from
here
like the rest of the world, or for the latest version (recommended) from
PreReleases.
Get from there also the
latest AlphaX
software, prereleases not yet generally available.
- You find Systems Ecology Courseware
here, and links to other teachware here. Make also good use of the
many sources of information provided in our group. Consult our e-Books and
don't forget that we have in our books collection many documents,
manuals, reference books, and some of the best books on many general
topics. They range from "how to setup a healthy working place" to how to
draw easy to read and otherwise effective scientific graphs. A learning
place for life!
- Note, shareware is NOT freeware. We pay for shareware. Consequently, if you use
the links listed below and download some shareware, you have the software installed,
but don't have the license yet. Please ask for the license by sending an
E-mail. This helps also
to keep track of how many licenses we need.
- We have currently purchased the following shareware / commercial products
(all are highly recommended and should be installed on your machine in addition
to the standard software packages like Office,
EndNote, and FileMaker):
- AlphaCocoa (macOS <= 13.7 Ventura)
or
AlphaX (Shareware - OS X)
or
Alpha (Shareware - MacOS 9 or older)
or possibly

- Stuffit Deluxe (Commercial product, ETH Zurich site license 'kostenfrei')

and

Note, "AF's ToInstall DVD X" contains a sophisticated launcher dock
that may be useful to you when starting to work with DragThing.
- ASM - Application Switcher Menu (shareware - OS X)

Any software you access via this page may be used in accordance with the rules
stated in
Benutzungsordnung für Telematik an der ETHZ (BOT).
This is of particular relevance for possible personal use of software licensed by ETH Zurich at home.
Generally, if you are in doubt about the permission or license of a particular software,
please ask.
Thanks. :-)
