Abstract:
This paper introduces a novel approach to visualizing migratory insect dynamics, as well as the resultant vegetation changes in real-time. A simplified mathematical model is applied to intelligibly represent migrating groups of insects in order to design a fast and efficient visualization technique. A hardware accelerated technique is used to alleviate the storage and computation burdens of the rendering process. The presented visualization method is implemented in an integrated spatio-temporal analysis system, which models, simulates and analyzes ecological phenomena such as insect migration through time at a variety of spatial resolutions. The visualization is applied to represent the final results in an intuitive manner, which allows research results to be easily understood by a wide range of users.
